Gary Smith

Gary Smith is Head of Portfolio Strategy and Risk at the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund. He is also a Lecturer at the Alberta School of Business and Program Director of the School’s PRIME Program. From 2010 - 2016 Gary was an Executive Professor in Finance at the Alberta School of Business, where he taught courses in Risk Management, Investments, and Fixed Income. In addition to teaching at the University of Alberta, he has taught extensively at the University of Saskatchewan and Concordia University (Montreal). He was the recipient of the McKenzie Visiting/Sessional Teaching Award at the Alberta School of Business in 2012.

Gary has broad experience in the finance industry. Before his current posting, he served as Chief Economist at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). He also worked at and was a shareholder in Casgrain and Company Limited, a privately-held Montreal-based investment dealer specializing in fixed income sales and trading. In the mid-1990s Gary served as a fixed income trader and Portfolio Manager at Alberta Treasury’s Investment Management Division, AIMCo’s predecessor organization. He has also consulted with private clients on investment-related matters. 

Gary has extensive board and committee experience. Presently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Community Foundation, and is Chair of that organization's Investment Committee, which oversees a balanced portfolio valued at approximately $500 million. He is also a past Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of The Alberta Capital Finance Authority. 

Gary completed his undergraduate and masters-level training at the University of Saskatchewan and received a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Alberta in 1996. He is also a CFA Charterholder.
